Week 21

Day 139, Monday 19th July

Well the kitchen is taking a little longer than I had hoped, but it is the most complex room in the house. What with the pipe work for water supply and waste, the water heater, sink plumbing and all the worktop and shelf requirements.

As the worktops are partially in and the sink plumbed, the worktop wood is constantly getting wet. The tiles have to go on even if its only around the sink for the time being.

If you read weeks 17 and 18, no doubt you know all about tiling the Tommy Walsh way. The wall is not straight, hence the worktop gets wider as it goes. And the worktop goes around a corner. Now will someone please write to Tommy and ask him where the middle of the tiled area is so we know where to begin?

After much debate; largely the Boss telling me that's not the way they do it on telly, I finally put my foot down. I am in charge of the structure and engineering. She makes the decisions on design. This is not design!

As the day is now almost over, the Boss will tile tomorrow, using the PB method!

Day 140, Tuesday 20th July

I spend the day trying to finish the run of worktops, making sure I leave enough space for the washing machine and dishwasher. I'd never forgive myself if I left the dishwasher out.

The Boss begins tiling the PB way and guess what? The lines across the front and even round the bend work perfectly; albeit with a little fiddling.

Got another few shelves in the kitchen fitted. Which makes space for more tiles!

Day 141, Wednesday 21st July

A friends of the Boss and her partner are visiting today. They are staying about an hour away, and should have no difficulty finding us, except for the last two kilometres. With mobile signals coming and going, they eventually get here.

Its hot. So hot we all sit alongside the van as its the only shade.

And guess what? Not much work advancement today.

Day 142, Thursday 22nd July

Day 143, Friday 23rd July

Day 144, Saturday 24th July

Today, we are going to try and buy windows. We're fed up with the local carpenter who we have told we want to go ahead. He was to come and measure accurately, but has not arrived.

If he's this keen before we pay a deposit, what will he be like after? So we're off to Castorama which is much larger than our local DIY store.

Their windows can be made to measure and I get a price. It is only about 100€ cheaper than the carpenter although he was to fit them. However, if we go for off the shelf, and I cut the stone to fit, we will save over 1,000€. No contest. We order them and can collect in two weeks.
